More of Sarahs story…

I can remember from the age of six being so connected to nature and all that was around me. From protecting trees in my family garden being removed for around the pool through to rescuing cane toads from the local school kids, I’ve always believed that everything and everyone is connected – we are all one and the same, and I could truly feel this.

I was extremely lucky to grow up with a very loving and supportive family. My immediate family moved out from England when I was seven years old. Growing up in the sunshine of South-east Qld, I have always been grateful for the amazing opportunities and lifestyle we have had.

I starting to dabble in the party life as I went through high school and I certainly wasn’t what you would call a dedicated student. I found the social pressure of school quite challenging and so I decided to leave at the end of year 11, and out into the workforce I went.

In my early twenties, I worked as a brain injury support worker for over 3 years, I realised that you could be out in the world leading a completely normal life, and then suddenly yours and your family’s lives can be changed in an instant. These patients gifted me with an insight into the value of life.

Moving through my twenties though, I still felt lost, I was unhealthy, overweight and I embraced a heavy party life in search for fulfilment. In hindsight, I was trying to find my self-worth.

One of the major turning points in my life was when one day I was in a health food store and discovered a sign for Personal Training sessions. This was a life-changing moment for me because it was the catalyst that led me to where I am today. I was blessed with a trainer who believed in me 100%, and this allowed me to train consistently for over 12months (something I had never been able to do). I was inspired by his engagement and genuine care that he had for each and every one of his clients. My trainer recommended that I too should become a personal trainer, so I enrolled in a Certificate Four in Fitness that same day, and started the course the following Monday! And so began my journey into fitness. From there, I built my own personal training business and worked on cruise ships.

One day, I decided that I would travel around Australia in a campervan. I packed everything up and arrived in North Queensland. Little did I know, that was as far as I was going to make it. This is where I just so happened to meet my amazing husband! We married a year later and had a beautiful daughter.

At the end of 2012, when my daughter was one year old, we moved to Brazil to live with my husband’s family. While I was there, everything that I believed in was questioned from how to live to the food we should eat. I witnessed my husband’s family living a self-sufficient, less stressful, happy and sustainable life. In all honesty, I must admit it was also an isolating time because I could not speak the language, I didn’t know anyone, and we were living in a very remote and isolated area. The beauty of this though is that it gave me time to think and to be mindful.

This is when the next major turning point struck me.
Prior to this, I had only ever done three yoga classes; however, one day I looked out the window and saw a beautiful hummingbird hovering, and I just KNEW that Yoga was going to be my life. I started studying by correspondence in Brazil and then came back to Australia at the end of 2014.

On our return I was pregnant with our son, and we were searching for where we wanted to live and to find long-term employment and finally came to call the Lockyer Valley home where my husband manages a beautiful organic farm. We spent 18 months living a minimalistic lifestyle, living in a bus to bring my dream to life. I opened Cura Life Yoga Studio in 2017 and haven’t looked back!

In the past, I was a party animal, a lover of life who pushed boundaries, and I believe that this allows me to connect authentically, bringing back humanship to my clients. I give permission to embrace one’s full-self to love who we are, and have ownership and acceptance of ourselves, flaws and all.

I am considered a Yoga Teacher and Spiritual Guide, and I am passionate about conscious living. My studio provides a space to learn tools to awaken and get ready to start living a life that you choose rather than living on auto-pilot.

It’s about not only creating a physical space, but also a space in your mind for self-discovery to learn who you are, quieten the mind, and live so that we can consciously choose our actions and our thoughts to manifest the exact life that we want to live.

What I find is that when we are living on auto-pilot with all the conditioning and beliefs that we don’t even realise that we have, it means that we go through life not really living, we don’t remember it, and life is over.

This is why I believe that stress management is so important. When we reduce the stress in our life, our body is then in an environment where it can self-heal. Our bodies are always trying to come into balance and harmony. So, when we allow our minds to stop and go into a safe space (which is relaxation), our body can heal, our mind slows down, and we realise the power that we have.

I am obsessed with ‘Conscious Movement Medicine’ being Yoga, dance or breathwork. I love teaching people how to be curious and interested in their own bodies by offering:

  • Yoga and Dance – Movement as Medicine
  • Pranayama and Meditation – Power of Breath and Sound
  • Discovering the Art of Sensation – Awakening your intuition and ancient wisdom within
  • Conscious Living
  • Community and Deep Connection

I believe that within us when we allow ourselves to find stillness, we can get out of our own way and discover who we truly are. My big vision is that everyone has the opportunity to understand that they have all of the tools within them to self-heal, and it’s my job to teach them how to harness them to create the life that they deserve.

What makes Cura Life unique is that the focus is more about creating an environment for self-healing, rather than getting the ‘moves and poses’ correct. When people come here, they are encouraged to be themselves. I purposefully do not have mirrors in the studio, and the lights are low to ensure that it’s private, reduces comparison and allows the client’s to settle in and just listen to their own body. This allows everyone to be who they truly are and remove any pressure knowing that they will be wholly accepted.

I consider myself to be like a Midwife to your new life. You need to show up and do the work, and I will be here to gently guide you and support you. Showing you different techniques to use to transition and transform into who you want to be and who you already are without all the limitations.

We have numerous testimonials and feedback from our clients, which you can check out here.

One Yoga Student, Anthony, smashed his pelvis and many bones in a sky-diving accident. Anthony attends Cura Life daily to assist with pain management. He lived for twenty years on heavy pain killers and has now been able to stop using them by using breath work, dance, yoga, meditation, and all the tools that we offer. Through incorporating these into this life and through consistent use, he now experiences longer-term pain relief, has lost 40kg’s, and found his life partner.

Many other students say that our tools have helped them with suffering from anxiety and depression. Saying that since beginning our classes they haven’t had an anxiety attack, and have been able to reduce medication. Other common benefits that are mentioned are reducing back pain, arthritis and stress.

Our monthly women’s-only Gathering, receives feedback that it has been life-changing for many of the attendees. They have found that by joining the community has provided them with a sense of belonging and self-acceptance, which gives connection and therefore a community where the women are being empowered to come together to accept themselves.

In my experience, I guide and nurture my clients through learning the different ways of how they can create space so that it improves personal development and personal realization. This is achieved by creating an experience. It’s not just about going to Cura Life to do Yoga; it’s a whole experience to make sure that you’re actually fully embodying the tools where it is physically moving through you so that you can feel how it works. This then empowers clients to have more control in their lives, feel more at ease, and at peace. Overwhelm dissipates and allows for clarity, calmness and feel soothingly energised.

Stress is the number one thing that brings people in to Cura Life, how to deal with stress management – whether that’s in their career, as a mother, or any of the other numerous roles that we play in life. It can often take a long time for the client to arrive at Cura Life – generally because they feel scared about who will be there and what they will have to do. They are nervous that they aren’t flexible or fit enough to take a class. A lot of clients are in emotional turmoil and feeling stressed, overwhelmed, and disconnected. There’s uncertainty, feeling of tightness and rigidity, and then you experience the joy of witnessing them find their freedom and flow and embracing of their inner-child.

Cura Life gives permission and the space to find peace and take off the pressure to release the tension of the mind, body, and emotions through offering:

  • Hatha Yoga Classes – Gentle and restorative practices
  • Meditation Series (Pop-up classes)
  • Nia Dance Class
